Laptop fan started making a loud noise... is there an easy fix?

I've had my toshiba satellite laptop for about a year now and just last night the fan started making an extremely loud whirring noise as soon as I turn the laptop on. The computer's performance has seemed to have gotten worse as a result; it now takes minutes to just sign into my user. I bought compressed air and tried spraying around where the fan is and into it though I am unable to take the top off. Is there anything I can easily try or should I just take it to a professional? Thanks.
