Why is my computer heating up so fast?

I've got a lenovo laptop with about 100GB free space (full capacity is 254GB), I shut down all the programs like games, vuze and anything. I turn it on and after an hour or so of just browsing online using google chrome and skyping the left side gets really hot and whirring sounds starts going off. Is there something wrong? Should I have it checked? Or are lenovos always this shitty?
